Pamela Chen -- Apollo and Bean
Apollo and Bean were a gift from my sister Brenda. We named them for space commanders from our favorite science-fiction stories. They proved to be bold explorers, of their own little universe, from day one.
A new shower curtain, a little bird in the window, a chair or table moved one inch to the left: the inseparable brothers investigate every disturbance. When one discovers something, the other must see it for himself. Together, they transformed the confines of my apartment into an endless frontier.
I uprooted myself three times to three cities within their first three years of life. True to their namesakes, they embraced the unknown better than I — and witnessing their adventures made me want to create. Apollo and Bean reconnected me to that simplest joy of photography again, over a decade after I first entered my newspaper’s darkroom.
They are my companions, but I often observe them as one who stares into the wild: with curiosity and no way of ever knowing. My home is their wonderland, and they never share their secrets but through this looking glass.
